PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to manufacture jewellery by forging metal. Forging is a process of forming metal to a desired shape by means of hammering.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the equipment and tools used to forge metal.
  • Prepare metal sheet and bar for forging.
  • Forge metal into specified forms.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the equipment and tools used to forge metal.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and their components used to perform the forging techniques are identified and their uses in different applications are explained in terms of key feature, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Practices are explained in accordance with the requirements to maintain good housekeeping, occupational health and safety and care of equipment in line with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The modifications needed to be made to both hammer heads and handles are described in accordance with task specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Occupational hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Housekeeping and safe working practices are adhered to and demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Heating, annealing and hammering tools, materials and equipment are selected and ensured to be ready for use prior to commencement for forging in accordance with site-specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The heating equipment and forging hammers are used in accordance with their design and in terms of jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Metal is forged into specified design forms in terms of jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Good workmanship, house keeping and safe working practices are demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety standards.

    The consequences of not adhering to correct workmanship, house keeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.
