PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to think about and plan a horse race in advance by understanding the effects that the state of going and the weather has on racing the horse. Learners will also be able to explain the effects that weights have on the outcome of the race and the strategies to employ. Learners will also be able to draw on a range of strategies for the race in order to get the best result.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the effects the race track and conditions have on racing the horse.
  • Explaining the effects of weight on a racing strategy.
  • Explaining the strategies for an optimal start in different circumstances.
  • Explaining the strategies for an optimal race and finish. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Unit standard: Demonstrate an understanding of rules applicable to jockeys for a race meeting at NQF Level 3.
  • Unit Standard: Read a horse Race at NQF Level 3.

    The effect of the "state of going" on racing is explained in terms of safety and finishing position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of the weather on racing are explained in terms of safety and racing strategy.

    Weather could include but is not limited to rain, heat and cold.

    The effect of wind on racing is explained in terms of headwinds and tail winds.

    Explain the effects of weight on a racing strategy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effect of the weight carried by the horses in a race is explained in terms of the selected strategy. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Weight effects could include but are not limited to jockey weight, dead weight.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    How to achieve the required weight limit is explained in terms of choice of equipment used, within a given case study. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Limits will include but are not limited to saddles, lead cloths, lead bags and boots.

    The apprentice allowance is explained in terms of the effect on weight allowance.

    The potential effect of the actual weight of the horse on the race is explained in terms of the selected strategy.

    How the number of horses in a race affects the start is explained in terms of a race strategy.

    Where the horse likes to run is explained with examples in order to maximise this. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The disadvantages of racing wide are explained with examples of its effects on finishing position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of the false rail are explained in terms of running into the straight. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effects of a short and long run-in are explained in relation to different race courses.

    Glossary of terms:
  • The state of going refers to the condition or state of the ground the horse is going to race on.
  • Dead weight refers to the extra weight carried by a race horse excluding the weight of the jockey.
  • Apprentice allowance refers to weight allowed to be deducted for an apprentice who has not yet ridden fifty winners.
  • Racing wide means racing off the rail.
  • A false rail is the rail that carriers the horses off the permanent rail in order to fan them out so that the horses racing at the back to obtain a clear run.
  • Short and long run-in are the distances to be run to the finish in the home straight.
  • International accepted standards refer to the standards according to the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications.
  • The legal and regulatory requirements are those sections of the Acts that relates to the humane handling of horses. They are:
    > The animal Protection Act 71 of 1962.
    > Performing Animals Act 24/35.
    > Power of Seizure Regulation 468 as contained I the animal Protection Act 71 of 1962.
