This unit standard will enable to learner assist a patient in adopting a wellness lifestyle within the scope of practice of the integrated health professions.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Recommend lifestyle changes for a patient to achieve wellness.
  • Describe a nutritional regimen for a patient to improve own health.
  • Assist a patient to obtain sufficient rest and sleep to maintain a wellness lifestyle.

    Recommend lifestyle changes for a patient to achieve wellness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Key wellness concepts and lifestyle components are identified and explained in terms of a wellness lifestyle. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Concepts include:
  • Lifestyle; 'human energy' as a vital component of wellness.

    Components include:
  • Nutritional requirements, sleep patterns, relaxation and healthy vs unhealthy activities.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual lifestyles are analysed in terms of actual wellness principles and practices and deviations noted are explained in terms of possible consequences for wellness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Changes in the assessed lifestyle are recommended to promote wellness in the individual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools to assist the patient in making choices are recommended to assist in maintaining a changed lifestyle.

  • Goal-setting skills; motivation skills; time-management skills; self-esteem and self-concept development skills.

    Describe a nutritional regimen for a patient to improve own health.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic components of food groups are described in terms of their nutritional value and required intake. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include:
  • Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, water.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nutritional needs of each body system are described in terms of individual needs to maintain health. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual needs include:
  • Specific requirements needed by certain groups of people such as diabetics; eating regimens and habits as determined by cultures, religious and personal persuasions.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The interaction of foods and drugs is explained in terms of nutritional needs, incompatibilities and the maintenance of health. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Supplements to nutritional intake are described according to their sources, functions, effects and required precautions to be taken with respect to their use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Disorders which require specific nutritional needs are identified and the effects of non-compliance with the special nutritional needs are explained.

    Disorders include:
  • Metabolic, deficiency, genetic.

    Assist a patient to obtain sufficient rest and sleep to maintain a wellness lifestyle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    History of current rest and sleep patterns is obtained and analysed in terms of probable need for a wellness lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The need to balance activity, relaxation and sleep is described in terms of achieving a wellness lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Active and passive relaxation exercises are explained with reference to their role in a wellness lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Individual sleep patterns are analysed and recommendations are made for the patient to achieve a regular pattern in keeping with a wellness lifestyle.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
