PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to understand the procedures relating to the nominating of horses for races in order to successfully propose horses to run in races within a horse's range of abilities and eligibilities.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the rules pertaining to nominating a racehorse for a race.
  • Completing a nomination form.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the procedures in preparation for a horse race.
  • Following rules and procedures with regards to scratchings from acceptance to race day.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the rules pertaining to nominating a horse for a race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The rules for "authority to act" are explained in order to run a race horse in a race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct procedure for nominating horses of various ages, sexes and racing history in the correct race is explained in a case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The declarations pertaining to a race are explained in terms of National Horseracing authority rules. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Declarations include but are not limited to:
  • Colours, blinkers, pacifiers, aluminium shoes, nose bands, tongue ties.

    The rules for different racing districts are explained with examples from each racing district.

    Racing districts include but are not limited to:
  • Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng.

    The time frame for a particular race is explained with examples from a race programme.

    Complete a nomination form.

    The information required to complete a nomination form is described according to local operator requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Where information to complete a nomination form is obtained from is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A nomination form is completed according to requirements and declarations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the procedures to follow in preparation for a horse race. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The weights form is read and explained from a race day programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The decision to scratch or accept 6 horses for a race is explained with examples from the weights form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The racing club is contacted and informed of acceptance/scratching timeously and jockey and declarations are confirmed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The final acceptances are checked to ensure that the information is correct and in order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The race card is checked for irregularities and misprints. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Transport and stable arrangements are described in a case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Follow rules and procedures with regards to scratching from acceptance to a race on a race day.

    Rules pertaining to unscheduled scratchings are explained in accordance with National Horseracing Authority rules and local operator requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The authorities to be notified are named in terms of the race day applicable.

    Scratchings are described in a case study.
