PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 3 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to clean and lubricate strip, assemble and set/tune a range of clothing machinery. Learners are also able to conduct running maintenance and to diagnose a range of clothing machinery and to utilise garment construction skills in testing machines. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 2 or must have had at least 1 years working experience within an industrial sewing environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Range of machines used will be selected from:
  • Single needle chainstitch machines.
  • Multi-needle chainstitch machines.
  • Coverseam machines.

    Describe the method of operation and practical application of chainstitch sewing machines.

    Mechanisms for controlling and handling thread during stitch formation are serviced in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Machines are set up and adjusted to sew a range of fabrics.

    Machines are compared for suitability with company products and requirements in terms of: Machine design, needle bar motions, internal motion drive systems, stitch forming mechanisms, thread handling controls, feeding systems, stitch length regulators, needle gauges, lubrication systems, motor drives, operation costs, maintainability.

  • Assessors need to register with the relevant education and training quality assurance body.
  • The assessor must be in possession of the NQF level 4 sewing machine mechanician qualification or equivalent and have a minimum of 5 years relevant working experience in this field.
