PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge to understand the nature of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys as well as thermo-plastic and thermosetting plastics. An understanding of the elements, characteristics and properties of each of these essential engineering materials will form the basis of an understanding of their industrial uses. The qualifying learner will be able to apply this knowledge of engineering materials to engineering machining processes.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the nature and use of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Explaining the nature and use of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
  • Explaining the nature and use of thermo-plastic and thermosetting plastics.
  • Explaining machining principles and processes in engineering.

    The chief properties and uses of cast iron and steel are listed in accordance with standard industry practice.

    The processes applied to steel by heat treatment are explained in accordance with standard industry practice.

    Machining processes that comprise various engineering machines is explained in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

    A simple freehand drawing and description is produced indicating various machining processes in required format and time frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Casting and forging processes are defined in accordance with standard industry definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The nature and purpose of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) are explained in relation to limits and fits.

    Conventional representation of machining terms are defined according to organizational requirements.

    The tables for selecting limits and fits for holes and shafts are explained and applied in line with organisational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
