PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is aimed at individuals required to use navigational skills to plot the position and progress of a vessel on the high seas using the navigational aids normally found on the bridge of a fishing vessel. The individual will be able to use radar to plot the position of other vessels both in relation to his/her own vessel and in absolute terms. In addition individuals will be able to project the course and speed of such vessels as well as probable positions at a given point in time.

In particular, learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate the use navigational aids in an operational environment.
  • Use nautical charts to plot the position of a vessel at sea.
  • Use navigational aids to determine the position of a vessel at sea.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate the use navigational aids in an operational environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The physical principles underlying the functioning of a magnetic compass is used in the demonstration of compass use in the operational environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The use of radar is demonstrated as it applies to operational requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The use of a rangefinder is demonstrated as it applies to the operational environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Global positioning system apparatus is used according to operational requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The error inherent in the application of navigational aids is taken into account and corrected for.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Navigational aids includes:
  • Compass; radar; rangefinder; Global Positioning System.

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Use nautical charts to plot the position of a vessel at sea.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An explanation is given of the features and navigational advantages of the projections used in charts, especially the Mercator Projection and the Lambert's Conformal Projection.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Relevant information is accessed off a nautical chart to make successful navigation possible.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Danger areas include:
  • Shallow reefs, rocks.

    Quality of the seabed includes:
  • Sand, loam, rocks, mud, various depths, beacons, ports of entry, location of buoys, currents.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Distance is measured through the use of the features of nautical charts and different projections.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Cross bearings are used to obtain a "running fix" on the position of a vessel at sea.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Includes but is not limited to:
  • Vector method in the presence of a current, plotting of a course line, identification of estimated positions.

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Use navigational aids to determine the position of a vessel at sea.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A vessels position, course and speed at sea are plotted trough the use of navigational aids.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Plotting includes but is not limited to:
  • Probable position, course and speed at a specified past, present and future time.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Knowledge of a vessels position, course and speed at a given time is used to determine estimated time of arrival as it applies to identified destinations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The position of vessels in relation to another is determined through the use of navigational aids.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Navigational aids includes:
  • Compass; radar; rangefinder; Global Positioning System.

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
  • Appropriate knowledge pertaining to Navigation.
  • Navigational aids/instruments (compass; radar; rangefinder; GPS).

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
    Self-organisation and management:
  • It is essential for the learner to be well organized and methodical when navigating and piloting a vessel on the high seas.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
    Information review:
  • Accessing and correctly interpreting the information on nautical charts is an essential skill that is a central focus of this unit standard.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
    Use of science and technology:

The learner is required is required to master the use of the compass, radar, rangefinder and GPS. A further expectation is that the learner has to explain the physical principles underpinning the functioning and design of these navigational aids and instruments.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
