PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The need for communities in or near forest plantations to develop and empower themselves through sustainable income generating initiatives is key to for sustainable community development.

The purpose of this unit standard is to provide knowledge and skills to target communities so that they are able to identify commercial opportunities within the forestry environment.

It is envisaged that the learner will develop skills that will ultimately empower the community through income generation activities. The outcome is that the community is self reliant and economically self-sustaining.

As a community worker, the learner will develop the following skills:
  • Participatory leadership/Interactive leadership.
  • Collaborative decision making.
  • Assertiveness.
  • Facilitate forest initiatives strategies.
  • Entrepreneurial Skills.
  • Problem solving.
  • Conflict management.

    In particular, they are able to:

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the policies and guidelines for assessment of that ETQA, in terms of agreements reached around assessment and between various ETQA's (including professional bodies).
