PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work in a manufacturing process or similar environment where they need to apply the introductory principles of electricity to the process of producing metals or the operation of electric furnaces (or kilns). It will contribute towards the achievement of a National Certificate in a manufacturing process or similar environment at NQF Level 2.

Persons credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate understanding of:
  • Electric current, electric potential, electric resistance and their interrelationships.
  • Electric power and electric energy.
  • System International (S.I.) units of measurements for the above.
  • The nature of magnetism and induction, and their basic applications.
  • The basic working of electric furnaces and kilns. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learning assumed to be in place and Recognition of Prior Learning:

    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that the learner has a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) in Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Activities (NQF Level 1) or an equivalent qualification. It also assume that the learner is working towards a qualification as part of a learning programme, which integrates all the required unit standards.

    The learning time will increase if the learner does not have:
  • A relevant NQF Level 1 qualification.
  • Experience in a relevant field.
  • Relevant quality awareness principles and procedures.

    The learning time will be decreased if the learner has experience in this field because:
  • The learning programme will be adjusted to build on what the learner already knows.
  • The learner can apply to have prior learning recognised.

    Demonstrate understanding of the nature of electricity, the carriers of electric current, how current flows through solids, liquids and gases, and the types of current.

  • Types of current include Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC). 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The (sub) atomic particles that carry electric current are described according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The movement of (sub) atomic particles through solid, liquid and gaseous matter is described according to the theory of atoms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The types of current are described according to the principles of electricity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of electric potential and electric resistance, their effects on electric current, and of the types of electrical conductor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of electric potential is described and how it affects current in both AC and DC according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nature of electric resistance is described and how it affects current according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ohm's Law is discussed and understanding shown of how current, potential and resistance influence each other according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The notions electric conductor, electric insulator and semi-conductor are explained and examples given according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The SI units and their symbols are identified for electric current, electric potential and electric resistance according to the principles of electricity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate knowledge of electric power and electric energy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The notion "power" in general and "electric power" in specific is explained according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationship between electric power, current and potential is explained and expressed in SI units and symbols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The notion energy in general and electric energy in specific, and how it relates to electric power, is explained and the unit of measurement given according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The components of electricity billing are explained according to Foundry electricity usage. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate understanding of basic electrical circuits and how electricity is received at home and at work. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Basic electrical circuits are limited to free-hand sketches.
  • Circuits include direct current (DC) and single phase alternating current (AC) and three phase alternating current (AC).
  • Circuits include parallel and series resistive loads.
  • The internal resistance of the supply (battery or AC) may be ignored.
  • Accepted mathematical concepts and formulae are utilised. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The resistance of multiple resistive loads in electrical circuits can be accurately calculated according to resistance calculating formula. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationships between potential, current, power and resistance in electrical circuits are understood and can be calculated according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why domestic supply has three wires and of the importance of earth leakage detection are discussed according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Three phase transmission is explained and the relationship between 380V and 220V AC elaborated on according to the principles of electricity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the dangers of electricity to the human body and associated basic safety rules. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Dangers of electricity includes current through the body and water.
  • Basic safety rules include earthing, isolation of equipment, insulating tools and personal protective equipment (PPE). 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The human body as part of an electric circuit is discussed and an understanding of the effects of potential and resistance shown according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Practical basic precautions in dealing with electricity are known and understood according to the principles of electricity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Demonstrate understanding of the interactive nature between a current carrying conductor, a magnetic field, and of the induction of current in a second conductor. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Sketches are made to illustrate and explain the principles.
  • No formulae or calculations are required. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The magnetic field around a current carrying conductor, the effect of polarity and the working of a DC magnet are discussed according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of an alternating magnetic field on an electric conductor and resulting magnetic forces is explained according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of an alternating magnetic field on a bath of molten metal is explained according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effect of the number of loops of an electric conductor in an alternating magnetic field and how it finds application in the transformer is explained according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The working of the electric motor and how/why the motor can also be utilised as a dynamo (DC) or alternator (AC) is explained according to the principles of electricity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The role of the alternator and transformer in nationwide power distribution is explained according to the principles of electricity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the electrical working of furnaces.

  • Furnaces include induction, arc and resistance types. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The electrical principles and construction of one type of Induction Melting furnace are explained according to furnace design. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Induction melting furnaces include coreless and channel induction types.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The electrical principles and construction of one other type of electric furnace are explained according to furnace design. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Other types of furnace include the arc furnace (for melting) and the resistance furnace (for heat treatment).
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
