PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify the trees and shrubs that can be transplanted successfully.
  • Prepare a tree or shrub for transplanting.
  • Understand why root damage must be avoided.
  • Transport ex-ground trees safely.
  • Prepare a suitable hole and plant the tree.
  • Install a stake to support the transplanted tree or shrub.
  • Provide the initial care for the transplanted tree or shrub.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare trees and shrubs for transplanting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The practices required for the preparations for transplanting shrubs and trees from "open ground" are explained in terms of the decision to lift and re-establish trees and shrubs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The deciduous trees and shrubs that can successfully be lifted and transplanted are identified in respect of the comparative ease with which these can be transplanted and the season in which these have the highest success rate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The evergreen trees and shrubs that can successfully be lifted and transplanted are identified in respect of the comparative ease with which these can be transplanted and the season in which these have the highest success rate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The trees and shrubs that are difficult to move or cannot be transplanted are identified with reference to the reasons why these specimens could die if lifted and moved to another location. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons for staking, training, trimming and pruning the young tree in the nursery are given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The various methods of staking, training, feathering, trimming and pruning of trees in a tree nursery are demonstrated in order to ensure that they realise their full ornamental potential. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The method of root-pruning trees and shrubs is demonstrated and the reasons for this are explained with the purpose of re-establishing the plant without undue stress and as quickly as possible. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The methods of trimming and pruning trees and shrubs are demonstrated and the reasons for doing this before transplanting them are explained to ensure that the ratio of leaves to roots is balanced and thereby places the least stress on the plant during the relocation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan the process and ensure that the correct procedures are followed for the re-establishment of trees and shrubs in various landscape situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The areas to be planted are identified and the plan for removal and re-establishment is described in terms of the priorities of the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The method of digging holes and preparing the soil is demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of the plant list is explained in relation to the locality and design requirements and the accordant availability of trees and/or shrubs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process for successfully lifting, heeling, planting and staking trees and shrubs is described in terms of the tasks that need to be conducted in sequence to ensure the successful re-establiment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The need to avoid damaging the branches and bark of a tree or shrub while transplanting it, is explained in terms of the preservation of the character and aesthetics of the specimen. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A programme for the aftercare of the planted trees and/or shrubs is compiled accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Lift trees and shrubs and protect these while being moved and in transit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The methods used to lift trees and shrubs are demonstrated and the reasons for this are explained with the purpose of ensuring that damage to any part of the plant is minimised while the plants are moved or are in transit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The necessity of taking due care in lifting, moving and re-establishing trees and shrubs within a landscaped or garden environment is explained to ensure that damage to surrounding plants or structures is kept to a minimum. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The heeling in of lifted trees and/or shrubs until they are needed is demonstrated in accordance with the company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The various methods of protecting the roots of trees and shrubs in transit are described in accordance with the company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The methods of protecting trees and shrubs from wind damage while in transit are described and the reasons for these explained with reference to the company procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Replant trees or shrubs and ensure that the appropriate plant care regime is applied for
    optimum growth. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The preparation of a suitable hole and the methods to improve the soil in the hole where the tree or shrub is to be planted are explained with the purpose of ensuring that the most suitable environment for the plant's re-establishment is created. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The method of planting the tree or shrub in its hole is described with reference to sound horticultural practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The watering schedule is described in terms of the application rate required for the specific trees or shrubs within the prevailing micro-climate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for drafting of a regular feeding programme are described and the methods are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The process for monitoring the re-established trees or shrubs is explained with relevance to the maintenance of optimum plant health.
