PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the factors that affect the implementation of an integrated and holistic approach to community development and the role that communities play in the process of policy formations. Learners will be able to explain the economic situation in a particular community and the importance of community participation in sustainable policy formation.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the integrated and holistic approach to current political and socio-economic conditions that impact on various communities.
  • Describing the value of community participation in policy formulation within the context of the integrated and holistic approach.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of socio-economic factors that impact on community development.

    The value of identifying and selecting a community development theory is explained in relation to the benefit and relevance for a specific context.

    The social components of a particular community are described in terms of how they impact on the development of the community.

    The economic situation in a particular community is explained with examples.

    The role of community development is described in terms of the reduction of poverty. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of community participation is described in terms of how it can be used in assessing the shortages, needs and resources for sustainable poverty reduction programmes.
