PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People credited with this unit standard are able to assess the design and functionality of a stable yard in terms of housing, paddocks and fencing for stud purposes.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Assessing the suitability of a stable complex for stud purposes.
  • Assessing the suitability of a stable yard.
  • Assessing breeding requirements and facilities.
  • Assessing the suitability of paddocks and fencing.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess the suitability of a stable complex for stud purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stable design is assessed in accordance with the specific requirements for housing of stud horses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stable design components include, but is not limited to:
  • American Barn, Loose Boxes and stalls.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stable complex is assessed in terms of suitability for housing of stud horses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements for housing stud horses include, but is not limited to:
  • Site, positioning, stables, tack room, fire fighting equipment, feed room, muck heap, hosing area, isolation box, utility box, electrical compliance and drainage system.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess the suitability of a stable yard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stable complex and grounds are assessed against practical requirements of a stud farm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practical requirements include, but is not limited to:
  • Type of flooring, practicality of fittings, access to water, drainage, utility access, proximity of paddocks, walkways in paddocks and stallion camps.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Health and safety of horses and staff are evaluated in relation to the facilities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Health and safety requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Loading ramps, crush, secure breeding area, teasing boards, secure mare preparation area and veterinary examination area.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Internal and external construction materials are assessed in terms of safety, durability, hygiene, aesthetic appeal and cost. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assess breeding requirements and facilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stud complex is assessed for specific housing requirements for breeding horses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements for housing requirements includes, but is not limited to:
  • Size of foaling box, size of stable doors and width, size of general boxes, size of stallion boxes, size of mare boxes, lighting, ventilation, flooring and storage area.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stud complex is checked for specific breeding facilities for stud horses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Crush, breeding area, mare preparation area, veterinary examination area, wash bay, observation rooms, surveillance systems and dummy mare.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Assess the suitability of paddocks and fencing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Paddock layout is assessed in terms of requirements for a stud farm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Size, construction, materials, shade, positioning, terrain, walk ways, gates and security.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fencing requirements and hazards are described in terms of personnel and horse injury. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fencing hazards includes, but are not limited to:
  • Protruding wire, loose poles, broken poles, power lines, weather and protruding bolts.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Paddock facilities are assessed in terms of requirements of a stud farm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Facilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Creep feeders, weaning pens, stallion camps, footing, grazing and water availability.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

  • The Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
  • The Performing Animals Protection Act 24/35.
  • The Veterinary and Para-Veterinary Professions Act 19 of 1982.
  • Powers of Seizure Regulation 468 as contained in the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962
