PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will provide the qualifying learner with the knowledge required to oversee the identification, establishment and maintenance of grassland that is used for grazing horses. It is expected that, in some instances, decisions will be based on information or advice acquired from specialists.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Assessing pasture for suitability.
  • Establishing suitable grazing.
  • Maintaining established pasture for horses.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess pasture for suitability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pasture suitability is assessed for grazing according to the sort of horse and specified nutritional needs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Horse sort includes, but are not limited to:
  • Old/retired, resting, working and specialist care.

    Features of the pasture are identified in terms of the suitability as a pasture for grazing.

    Pasture features includes, but are not limited to:
  • Permanent, seasonal, for specific stock, climatic factors, gradient, evenness of surface, soil type and profile, herbage, fencing/shelter, access, services (water/electricity), security and safety.

    Establish suitable grazing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A strategic plan to establish grazing is devised taking all relevant factors into account. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Relevant factors include, but is not limited to:
  • Previous use of the site, existing structures and services, soil conditions and different weather conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The soil structure and pasture coverage is analysed to ensure sufficiency in relation to re-seeding and corrective action. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors of sufficiency includes, but is not limited to:
  • Site drainage, quality of the pasture, grazing and rotational grazing rates, methods of protecting the pasture from physical deterioration, types of nutrients which may be applied and the limits of your responsibility in relation to the handling of nutrients, potential environmental impact of activities and how these can be minimized, restrictions on land use and planning regulations, relevant legislation and codes of practice.

    The paddock is designed and constructed according to the type of horse accommodated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Horse types include, but is not limited to:
  • Old/retired, resting, breeding, working and specialist care.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fencing and shelter is erected to ensure a safe and secure environment.

    Maintain established pasture for horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and equipment for maintaining the pasture are used and maintained in accordance with manufacturers' instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemicals and nutrients are employed in accordance with environmental safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The established pasture is monitored and maintained in accordance with production requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Monitoring activities includes, but is not limited to:
  • Grazing rates, rotational grazing, pests and diseases.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
