PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The purpose of this unit standard is to provide opportunities for learners to develop skills and thought processes to engage in humane equine activity. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to identify a natomy and conformation of a horse's body and legs.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:

Demonstrating anatomy of a horse.

Understanding of paces, breeds, types and sizes of equine.

Recognizing correct and incorrect conformation.

Identifying various conformation defects and their effects on performance.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:

Communication, NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

Mathematical Literacy, NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

Describe functional system and physiology of an equine at NQF Level 3.

Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy of a horse.

Main anatomical and physiological features of equine are listed and named.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Points of the horse and external body parts are identified by name and location.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Horse conformation is identified by name and location in accordance with breed.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Leg conformation is identified in accordance with breed and use.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

Effects of conformation faults affecting the structure, function and usefulness of the horse are described.

Thre ability to assess and correctly name good and weak conformation features is demonstrated.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Conformation defects and their effect on the horse's performance are recognized and demonstrated.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Equine balance, movement and type is understood and demonstrated.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 3 qualification in the music field.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
