PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this Unit Standard will be able to conduct a guided experience on horseback for multiple days (provided that staff to client ratio does not exceed 1-6). The learner achieving this Unit Standard will be able to practice as a Ride Leader in a horse trail operation as a tourist guide envisaged in the Tourism Amendment Act in situations that require this level of competency.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Select and prepare horses for a multi-day horse trail.
  • Prepare clients for a multi-day horse trail.
  • Guide the multi-day horse trail.
  • Manage rest stops during the multi-day horse trail.
  • Establish and manage an overnight camp for horses and clients.
  • Conclude a multi-day horse trail.

    Select and prepare horses for a multi-day horse trail.

    Horses are selected according to assessed rider requirements and trail conditions to limit stress and discomfort.

    Horses are prepared in gear in terms of horse trails to enables control by rider and comfort for horse and rider.

    Pack horses are prepared in gear which is secured firm and comfortable for the horse, allows free forward movement of the horse, and is not anticipated to cause stress or injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation is completed according to legislative requirements, and worksite procedures.

  • Previous experience, height, weight, confidence and age.

    Riders' preparation of personal gear is supervised in accordance with worksite procedures.

    Gear includes, but is not limited to:
  • Day gear and swags.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Rider check of clothing and equipment is conducted to ensure fitment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and worksite safety procedures.

    Equipment includes, but is not limited to: safety helmet, stirrup iron size and sun protection, fully equipped First Aid Kit.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mounting assistance is provided according to standard industry practice to minimise stress or injury to horses and riders. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Mounting assistance includes, but is not limited to: leg up, mounting block and holding opposite stirrup.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tack is adjusted according to standard industry practice to ensure comfort and control for rider and comfort for horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Pre trip brief is carried out in accordance with worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pre-trip briefing includes, but is not limited to:
  • Ride etiquette, riding position, riding skills, introduction of guide(s) and other trail participants, guidelines and rules of the trail, description of the trail, rider's personal comfort, assistance during the trail, environmental care code and waste management.

    Destination is determined and progress maintained according to experience of clients and terrain to ensure minimum stress or discomfort to riders and horses.

    Group dynamics are monitored continually to determine mental and physical comfort of clients and horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mental or physical discomfort of riders and horses are alleviated in accordance with safety requirements and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hazardous situations or actions related to riders and horses are identified and managed in accordance with safety requirements and worksite procedures.

    Hazards include, but are not limited to:
  • Unsafe actions by clients, lack of confidence with horse, misbehaving horse, other horses misbehaving; environmental hazards and obstacles.
