PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of the unit standard is for learners to be able to produce multiple-colour relief prints using multiple-block and reduction relief printmaking methods. Multiple-colour relief printmaking methods and techniques provide learners with a basis both for the development of more advanced printmaking methods (using combinations of methods) as well as a set of methods that they can apply to the production of marketable fine art prints.

Visual artists equipped with this competence will be able to contribute to the development of a professional culture of printmaking within the visual arts sector, and produce artwork which is underpinned by a comprehensive understanding and confident application of the tools, materials and equipment associated with multiple-colour relief printmaking methods.

  • Preparing and incising print surface(s) for multiple-colour relief printmaking.

    Plan and develop an image/design for multiple-colour relief printmaking.

    Preparatory investigations related to image/design are presented. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Artistic intentions associated with image/design are explained with regard to the technical and formal constraints and possibilities presented by multiple-colour relief printmaking methods as an artistic medium. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant precedents for artwork using multiple-colour relief printmaking techniques are identified and discussed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Formal qualities of image/design demonstrates that consideration has been given to the technical constraints and possibilities inherent in single block relief printmaking as a medium with regard to level of detail, colour, mark-making. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Detailed technical plans for sequencing of cutting and printing of image/design are presented. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Technical experiments with different surfaces, papers, colours and cutting methods for multiple-colour relief printmaking are presented in the context of explaining intentions and plans.

    Prepare and incise print surface(s) for multiple-colour relief printmaking.

    The image/design has been accurately drawn and cut into the printing surface in accordance with artistic intentions and technical plans. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The ability to apply direct drawing as well as transfer methods (including pasting the drawing/design) should be demonstrated.

    Planned sequence of cutting and printing has been correctly observed.

    Deviations from plans is explained with reference to the particular qualities of the medium.

    A range of cutting methods are demonstrated in accordance with artistic intentions.

    Occupational health and safety considerations have been observed in preparing and cutting printing block(s).

    Develop image through a multi-colour relief printing process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Test prints demonstrate process of refining image through experimentation with different ink consistencies, types of paper, procedures for preparation of paper and settings on printing press. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Required adjustments to image are accurately identified with reference to original design and qualities of medium. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Required adjustments are effected in accordance with artistic intentions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Occupational health and safety considerations are observed with regard to preparation and use of ink, printing block and use of printing equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Produce edition of multi-colour relief prints.

    Conventions for signing, numbering and dating prints are correctly applied.

    Occupational health and safety considerations are observed with regard to preparation and use of ink, printing block and use of printing equipment.

    Prints are appropriately organised, packaged and stored with due regard for archival integrity and portability.
