PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner is capable of packing a static line square main parachute. After packing the learner must be able to complete the packing administration.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify the components and equipment required to pack a static line square main parachute.
  • Inspect the static line square main parachute prior to packing.
  • Pack a static line square main parachute.
  • Administer the packing process.

This unit standard together with the unit standard "Perform static line square parachute descents" prepares learners for the unit standard "Perform as a team member during tactical air operations" for the purpose of maintaining security and peace in the RSA or in a recreation and sport environment.

The achievement of this unit standard will contribute to the personal development of members in the special operations environment and further mobility and transportability within the adventure sports industry.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:

  • Double bag closing hook.
  • Static line.
  • Day or night with light.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The equipment required to pack a static line square main parachute is identified in terms of its use and operating principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The preparation of the required equipment to pack a static line square main parachute is demonstrated according to its operating principles.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Inspect the static line square main parachute prior to packing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The assessment of the serviceability of the various components of the dual assembly static line parachute system is demonstrated to ensure that it fits within the manufacturers limitations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The nature of faults on the system and the solving of rigging problems related to packing is demonstrated in a set sequence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The implications of the problems on the opening of the parachute, if not properly packed are discussed in order to minimise the risk to the parachutist.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The possible faults that can occur prior to packing are analysed and discussed in order to inform future decision making.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Actions upon fault identification are demonstrated in a structured scenario.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Pack a static line square main parachute.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The conditions under which packing can take place are discussed in order to minimise the possible damage to the parachute.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The packing of the parachute is demonstrated according to the manufacturer's specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The possible faults that can occur during the packing of a parachute and implications thereof are discussed in order to minimise the level of risk the parachutist is being exposed to.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The influence of safety hazards on the dual assembly static line parachute system is discussed in order to prevent possible damage to the parachute.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Safety hazards include but are not limited to:
  • Exposure to the elements.
  • Concrete.
  • Lubricants.
  • Open flames.
  • Chemicals.
  • Adverse wind conditions.
  • Day or night with suitable light conditions.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Application of safety procedures during the packing of the static line square main parachute is demonstrated in order to ensure functioning during deployment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Administer the packing process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The role of, and importance of completing the logbook is described in terms of its impact on the life span of the parachute and safety of the parachutist.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The ability to enter essential data in the logbook is demonstrated to optimise record keeping.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The conditions for the storage of parachutes are explained taking exposure and damage to the parachute into consideration.
