PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for learners who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to repair or refurbish diamond processing equipment.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment used in the diamond polishing industry and evaluate the extent of repair or refurbishment necessary.
  • Liaise with the user of the equipment to be repaired or refurbished.
  • Arrange for the repair or refurbishment of equipment.
  • Inspect the installation and application of equipment in the workplace.
  • Conduct post-repair-or-refurbish equipment activities.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Equipment used in the diamond polishing industry at NQF Level 4.
  • Communication at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment used in the diamond polishing industry and evaluate the extent of repair or refurbishment necessary.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment and their accessories that are used in the process of polishing diamond gemstones are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The potential scope for repair or refurbishment of equipment used in the diamond polishing industry is described in terms of practicality and cost effectiveness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The sources where repair and refurbishment can take place are identified and the scope of such remedial work described in terms of the capability of the repairing or refurbishing operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment in need of repair or refurbishment is evaluated and remedial action is diagnosed taking into account the time, cost and practicality of remedial action required. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Liaise with the user of the equipment to be repaired or refurbished. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of maintaining good relationships with the owner and user of the equipment to be repaired or refurbished is explained in terms of good working relationships co-operation and customer service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of not making obligations on behalf of the repairing or refurbishing operation is explained until a proper evaluation of the work required to be done has been carried out by a person qualified to do so. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of ensuring that the recommendation for repair or refurbishment of equipment is duly documented is explained in relation to authorisation to perform the work and acceptance of the obligation to pay for the work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Users are contacted and recommendations are made in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Arrange for the repair or refurbishment of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Detailed remedial action instructions are issued once authority to carry out a repair or refurbishment is obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Authorised repairs or refurbishments are referred to the appropriate operation to carry out the remedial work. Appropriate documentation is used to signify the authority to proceed in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Regular follow up of outstanding repair or refurbishment work is made to ascertain progress and the likely date of return. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Items reported to have been repaired are tested to ensure that the equipment is in good working order before installation in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Items tested to be in good working order are transported to the workplace for installation in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Inspect the installation and application of equipment in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of compliance with the requirements of other workplaces in which the leaner may need to work are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and security as well as good working relationships, inter departmental co-operation and customer service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The general principles for maintaining security of diamonds in the workplace are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Candidates comply with the security requirements and workplace specific procedures for the installation and observance of the application of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment is transferred from the user to the repairing or refurbishing operation in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The installation of the equipment in the workplace is examined to ensure that it complies with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Repaired or refurbished equipment is tested in its location in the workplace to ensure that it operates in accordance with specified requirements.

    Conduct post-repair-or-refurbish equipment activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate documentation is completed to signify the transfer and/or installation of the equipment in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Housekeeping, safety practices in the workplace and care of equipment are explained in line with workplace specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • All relevant documentation is returned and/or filed for record purposes.
  • The working area is cleaned after installation and any packaging materials used to protect the equipment in transit are reclaimed where appropriate of disposed of into correct facilities.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
