This unit standard is required by people working in the manufacturing environment. They need to understand and apply the principles of JIT and lean manufacturing and to ensure continuous improvement in the workplace.

    The concept 'lean' and lean manufacturing are defined in line with Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK).

    The key principles of lean are described using given data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The five-step process for implementing lean techniques in a manufacturing environment is described using a flow diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is defined in line with Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK).

    The use of value stream mapping in identifying and decreasing waste in a manufacturing process is explained using examples.

    The push manufacturing strategy and the pull manufacturing strategy are compared in terms of their similarities and differences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The components of a pull manufacturing strategy are described and the benefits achieved from employing this strategy are described according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process of line balancing is explained according to procedures using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The kanban approach to controlling work in a flow-shop manufacturing environment is described according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The difference between a two-card and single-card Kanban is critiqued according to their uses.

    The significance of Kanban rules is evaluated in line with Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK).

    The sequence used in identifying and eliminating a constraint is described according to procedures.

    The approach of the theory of constraints to manufacturing is compared to the more traditional approaches in line with Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK).

    Techniques for eliminating waste in the supply chain are in terms of their similarities and differences.

    Techniques include but are not limited to six sigma work study, the 5S program.

    Six sigma is defined and its use as a technique in the field of continuous improvement is described using given examples.
