PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons working in the laundry industry. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to use a tumble dryer and organize and control the tumble drying process in a commercial laundry environment.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Plan and prepare items to tumble dry.
  • Tumble dry items.
  • Perform end of tumble drying procedures.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or the equivalent.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare items to tumble dry. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to all textiles that need to be fully or partially dried by means of any machinery that uses hot or cool air to pass through the textiles whilst inside any machinery that produces a tumbling effect to the textiles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Care labels and symbols on laundry items are explained in terms of reaction to the tumble drying process on the items. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of fibres and fabrics are described in terms of their reaction to the heat applied as part of the tumble drying process and how they must be dealt with during and after the drying process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Items not suitable for tumble drying are removed according to the care labels and symbols on each item and redirected for alternative finishing methods according to worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Suitable tumble dryer programme is selected per type of textiles to be tumble dried. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work relating to drying items is planned according to worksite procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tumble drying process is explained to demonstrate knowledge and understanding using standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tumble dryer is loaded according to manufacturer's weight load instructions and the textiles loaded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hazards associated with the tumble drying process are explained in terms of their tumble drying effect on the textile finished appearance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Causes and prevention of spontaneous combustion is explained in terms of the tumble drying process and the handling, unloading and storage of tumble dried textiles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tumble dryer is operated in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Malfunctioning tumble dryers are identified and stopped in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform end of tumble drying procedures.

    Tumbled work is checked against the planning schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tumble dried items are unloaded from the tumble dryer and unsatisfactory and damaged items are removed and redirected in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Dried items are passed onto the next process according to worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faulty equipment is reported according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Routine maintenance of tumble drying machine is implemented according to the manufacturer's instructions, preventative maintenance and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    All waste generated through the tumble drying process is disposed of in accordance with work site procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
