PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
To promote tolerance of social diversity. To encourage active and positive engagement in social transformation. Individuals will be able to understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens and actively exercise these. Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to: demonstrate an awareness of the basic elements and practices of
different ethical belief systems; demonstrate an understanding of various forms of prejudice and stereotyping; demonstrate an understanding of class, political and cultural diversity, demonstrate a critical understanding of the contents of the Bill of Rights a s well as demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities associated with the Bill of Rights. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Communication ABET level 3 in both English and Mother tongue or equivalent titled `Engage in a range of speaking and listening interactions`.

OUTCOME NOTES 
An understanding that everyone under a democratically elected government with a constitution is entitled to particular rights must be emphasised. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Discussion should focus around responsible citizenship and the right to object to unconstitutional policies.

3. An understanding of conflicting interpretations of aspects of the Constitution in general and the Bill of Rights in particular, is demonstrated. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
4. Understanding of points of view opposed to some or all of the contents of the Bill of Rights, is demonstrated.

5. An understanding of the relationship between the rights set out in the Bill of Rights and their associated responsibilities is demonstrated.
