PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
  • Select the most suitable system of water reticulation for an application.
  • Determine the sizes of water pipes used to convey hot, chilled or condenser water for air-conditioning or refrigeration systems.
  • Make a piping layout, recommend installation methods and select the essential, commonly used accessories required for water distribution and balancing.
  • Determine the pressure loss and pump duty for a system.
  • Select the pump for the duty required.

    Interpret architectural and refrigeration and air-conditioning plant layout drawings and sketches.
    Explain the operation of vapour compression refrigeration systems. Demonstrate knowledge of water piping systems, its components, accessories and controls for refrigeration, air-conditioning installations. Explain the need for water treatment and the methods and equipment used. Demonstrate knowledge of building construction and building services. Identify insulation methods and materials for piping as applicable to refrigeration and air-conditioning. List the commonly applied air-conditioning systems and explain their application.
