PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Select the most suitable and cost effective air-conditioning system for comfort and industrial applications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Interpret architectural drawings and sketches.
  • Name the commonly applied air-conditioning systems, explain their application and operation and identify and explain the operation of the control devices and control systems required.
  • Calculate the cooling requirements for air-conditioning applications
  • Compile and appraise a control sequence description.
  • Calculate the running cost of a refrigeration or air-conditioning system.
  • Design air distribution systems for air-conditioning systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the following:
  • Legal matters pertaining to air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, comfort conditions for humans, air filtration systems, the vapour compression refrigeration cycle, capacity control systems, vibration control systems, water piping systems for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, and building construction and building services.
  • Generate a technical report.

    The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.
