Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Demonstrate an understanding of the reductionist view of the world. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The Cartesian world-view is analysed with an emphasis on its origins and the effect it has had on our understanding of the world. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
A presentation outlining the contributin of Isaac Newton to the reductionist approach, and which also highlights the significant advances in scientific thought that have come through this approach, is developed and presented using appropriate media. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The impact of quantum mechanics on the reductionist paradigm, and the role of the Uncertainty Principle in changing the prevailing world view at the turn of the 20th century is explained to interested parties. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Demonstrate an understanding of the world from a systems perspective. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
An analysis is provided of the fundamental role networks play in any system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The network, as the basic building block of a systems view of the world, is elaborated upon using the ecology of any organisation as a case study. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The role that an observer plays in influencing a system is outlined, with reference both to micro and macro occurrences. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Examples of the cumulative effect of small perturbations on a system are documented with reference both to the learner's organisation of choice and to any real world events. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Three different communities and their practice in organisation is identified and with a careful elaboration of what the salient characteristics are constituting "community" in each case. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The ways in which each of these communities of practice have formed, are examined and documented in a presentation that elaborates on the spontaneous nature of their establishment in response to a specific set of prevailing conditions within the system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Explain how complex systems affect organisational change. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
An analysis is provided of the impact of diversity on a system, with a clear indication being provided of what it was in the nature of the diversity within the organisation that actually provided the observed effects. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
An example is provided of how a small change has had significant transformational impact on any organisation of the learner's acquaintance. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The ways in which organisational transformation in a selected organisation can be affected using the principles of complex systems are explained with written examples. |
