PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can operate the sanding process in the fibreboard and chipboard process, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Load product onto the infeed conveyor
  • Operate the stack infeed controls
  • Set up the sander heads
  • Change the sander belts
  • Record Data
  • Attend to sander malfunctions 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the fibreboard and chipboard industry process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF Level 2 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment which can be described as a fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing plant with all its equipment and the correct sequence of the production phases.
  • The spread of raw material processed and products produced by the operation.
  • The people involved in the various workplaces.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Load product onto the infeed conveyor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A check is carried out to ensure that the correct product is on the line as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stack on the infeed conveyor is checked for correct alignment as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate the stack infeed controls. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The stack is square on the lifting device. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stack is brought in to provide minimal delay to the sanding process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Set up the sander heads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The interim thickness between each head is in accordance to the specified requirements as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The measuring instrument has been read accurately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The final thickness is to specification as stipulated in production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The surface of the board is graded to meet the required quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reject board is segregated from the "good" board as per quality requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Change the sander belts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The belts are changed as indicated in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All the relevant detail is recorded as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The undamaged belts are stored correctly as per work instructions.

    All the sanding activities are recorded as per work instructions.

    The records are balanced at the prescribed intervals in the sanding production as per work instructions

    The production results are recorded as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The records accurately reflect the production output. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Attend to sander malfunctions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Malfunctions are handled as per work instructions to minimise downtime. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The communication apparatus is used as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his/ her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
