PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can convert board into skillets by operating the match skillet printing machine, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Check and Set Up Machine
  • Check the Gravure and printing unit
  • Conduct the process control test
  • Record raw material data and Process control checks
  • Monitor and control quality of skillets 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an NQF 1;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of the Unit Standard covers:

    i) The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
    ii) All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
    iii) All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
    iv) All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
    v) All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    b) The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    c) The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Check and Set Up Machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The Gravure cylinders are checked if they are not scratched before being inserted into the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A clean ignition paint trough is placed in the gravure unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ignition paint trough is filled with tested ignition paint as per work instruction and recorded in the Process Control Sheet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ink ducts and ink rollers are replaced if required as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ink ducts are filled with the required ink colour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The ignition pump and machine is switched on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The blowing fans and drying towers are checked as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Check the Gravure and printing unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The board is checked to ensure it is centralised when it goes through the gravure unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Gravure cylinder, which applies the ignition strip, is checked as per work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The rubber rollers, paint trough, doctor blade is checked as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Date stamp is checked and set up as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ink ducts on the print unit, printing rollers, and print plates are checked for damage as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct the process control test. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The test equipment is set-up to conduct viscosity check as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The paint viscosity is tested in 30-minute intervals to determine whether it is within specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Corrective action is taken as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Record raw material data and Process control checks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Batch numbers, reel number, and weight of the board are recorded in the logbook. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Production and waste volumes are recorded in the logbook. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All machine stoppages are recorded in the logbook. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    In-process checks are recorded on the process control sheet as per work instructions 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Monitor and control quality of skillets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Product that does not conform to the quality specification is removed from machine and discarded as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Product, which is incorrectly dated or not dated, is removed as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Shut down and clean the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The machine is switched off. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ignition pump is switched off and flushed according to work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Gravure and printing unit parts are removed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The machine is blown to free dirt and work area cleaned. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
