PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is to enable people to assemble and manufacture nail-plated timber roof trusses, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Select and move pre-cut timber and nail plates
  • Set jig for assembly of nail plated timber roof trusses
  • Assemble pre-cut timber and nail plates in jig and press timber roof trusses

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the timber roof truss manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements;
    iv) Knowledge of housekeeping principles.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i. All the safety rules and personal protective equipment employed in the relevant production stage.
ii. The relevant pressing equipment and jig mechanism for the assembly and manufacturing of the timber trusses.
iii. All equipment, tools, measuring tapes used in the setting up and pressing of timber trusses.
iv. All the personnel involved in the pressing stage

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the timber roof truss manufacturing activity.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a timber roof truss manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Select and move pre-cut timber and nail plates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Pre-cut timber is identified and moved timeously to the correct jig position as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Pre-cut timber is placed in appropriate position alongside jig for efficient handling and placement as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Correct nail plate sizes and quantity for truss is drawn from stock or cut from bar stock and conveyed to jig position as per job sheet.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Set jig for assembly of nail plated timber roof trusses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Jig set equipment is in suitable condition to ensure accurate fabrication and all defects and/or possible problems are reported to the line manager as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Truss types and dimensions are correctly interpreted for the setting out of jig pressing points from the design drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Truss variations on job from cutting bills are sorted in order to optimize efficiency to reduce numbers and variations of jig position settings on the same job.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Jigs are accurately set up from dimensions given on design drawings, ensuring all overall lengths, heights and joint positions are accurately located, in order to accommodate pre-cut timber.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Assemble pre-cut timber and nail plates in jig and press timber roof trusses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Pre-cut timber is identified from stock adjacent to jig and assembled in a flat plane onto correct positions on the jig assembly system ensuring that no damage is caused to any of the members or jigs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The assembled truss conforms to detailed drawing and is accurately identified as per job sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
All joints are close fitting and members have not been forced into position as a result of inaccurate cutting or timber defects such as twisting or bowing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Any timber defects such as dead knots and wane at the joints are detected and the appropriate corrective action is taken as per workplace instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The identified nail plates are accurately placed to underside and top of timber at each pressing point, where the Roller Press System is used, plates are securely tacked into position, ensuring that the nails are vertically driven into position as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
The timber is securely clamped into position in the jig, the press is started up and the pressing mechanism is driven to each pressing point of the truss to ensure that all top and bottom plates are fully pressed into the timber in positions within allowable tolerances as per design requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Trusses are carefully lifted from jig and correctly handled and moved to completed truss storing area as per workplace instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
Where the Roller Press System is used, trusses are correctly and safely lifted from the assembly area and fed through press, correctly received and handled to ensure that all top and bottom plates are fully pressed into position within allowable tolerances as per design requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9
All safety precautions are strictly adhered to as per workplace instructions.
