PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the cartographic occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining cartographic skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to produce cartographic products according to cartographic specifications and design standards.

A qualifying learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Compile maps cartographically from varied sources.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the elements of cartographic images.
  • Produce maps digitally.
  • Prepare the map for printing.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF Level 5 mathematics, language and communication, knowledge of fundamental cartographic principles, generalisation of cartographic data and basic photogrammetry for map production.

    The attainment of the following unit standards will facilitate better understanding of this unit standard:
  • Utilise satellite imagery to identify features and carry out image classification for mapping purposes.
  • Interpret photographic detail from aerial photography for annotation purposes.
  • Design and produce cartographic products using fundamental Cartographic principles.
  • Generalise Cartographic Data in the production of Cartographic products of various themes and scales.
  • Design and produce cartographic products and maps with the use of a Geographical Information System.
  • Select a map projection for cartographic design and production.

    Registration systems, materials and tools, specifications, production procedures of a typical 6 colour map from Fair Drawing to final film for printing, CMYK, special visual techniques.

    2. Data models for digital cartographic information are understood and explained.

    3. Data capture techniques are described and the theory underpinning these methods are understood and explained.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    4. Anyone wishing to become an assessor or provider of learning must provide an affordable assessment / learning service.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
