  • The learner is capable to prepare a part for paint application, apply spray paint techniques and identifying paint defects and understand their causes.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to apply a paint application on a part. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Prepare includes mounting the part on trestles, clean and sand the part, wash and dry the part and identify the tools and equipment to be used.
  • Tools and equipment includes the applicable spray gun, air supply, paint mixture, personal protective equipment and masking material. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The part is prepared in accordance with the workplace procedures to receive the applicable paint application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ability to select and use the appropriate tools and equipment to perform the paint application is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The understanding of the process is confirmed by responding accurately to task related questions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform spray painting techniques on the part in a safe and aware manner. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Spray painting techniques includes distance control, application control, angle control, paint thickness and trigger control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate spray paint techniques are demonstrated in accordance with the part construction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The finished paint application is in accordance with the standards required for the paint and the part. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety precautionary measures to be taken are identified and clearly explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Interact with others to identify paint defects and understand their causes. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Paint defects include but not limited to runs, fish eyes, blisters and orange peel.
  • Causes include incorrect settings of the equipment, incorrect techniques, contamination, incorrect curing and incorrect preparation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The knowledge and understanding of paint defects and their causes are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Explanations given are clear and appropriate examples are given.

    Appropriate literature is referred to when explanations are given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Learner is able to evaluate the benefits and difficulties of team work within his/her own work context.

    The understanding of the process is confirmed by responding accurately to task related questions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Discuss, explain and demonstrate the cleaning and storing procedures of spray painting equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Clean and storage procedures includes the stripping and cleaning of the spray gun, disposal of excess paint and materials, the safe storage of the spray painting equipment. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All the cleaning and storage procedures for the spray painting equipment is explained and demonstrated in accordance with the workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The disposal of excess paint and materials are explained and demonstrated in accordance with the workplace and SHE procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The understanding of the process is confirmed by responding accurately to task related questions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Deliver the sprayed part and restore the work area. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Deliver includes to the relevant department and the completion of the required documentation.
  • Restore the work area includes cleaning the work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The knowledge of delivering the sprayed part and the completion of the documentation in accordance with the workplace procedures are demonstrated.
