PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to a project team or project organisation with a view to relating the project team activities to the learner's own context and experience of the world of work and is intended as an independent research programme. The person credited with this unit standard is able to identify and explain the roles and responsibilities within a project team, as well as demonstrate an understanding of the guidelines and procedures for project teamwork.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the core activities of a selected organisation or project.
  • Explaining the support functions within a selected project team.
  • Explaining the role of a selected support team or section in a project team.
  • Investigating the different types of work done in the project team. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Understand the project and project support services environment. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Identify and explain the core activities of a project.

    The concept of core activities are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Core activities are named with reference to a selected organisation or project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationships between the different core activities of an organisation or project are described and compared in terms of importance and value added to the organisation or project. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and explain the support functions within a selected project team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of a support function is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific project support functions are named and an indication given of the team, section or people responsible for each support function in the project team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between the project manager or project management team and the project support teams, sections or personnel is explained and an indication is given of how the project manager utilises the assistance of the personnel responsible for the project support functions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the role of a selected support team or section in a project team and its contribution to the effectiveness of the project team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The main function of a selected support team or section is explained in relation to the activities of the project team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of another support team or section that interacts with the selected support team or department is explained and an indication is given of how the efficiency of the support teams or sections impact on each other. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The most senior person in the support team or section is identified with, where applicable, the title of his/her position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reporting from the learner to the senior person in the support team or section is explained and an indication is given when it is appropriate to refer a matter to a higher authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effect on the project if the support team or section did not function effectively is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The value that the support team or section adds to the project team is identified with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Investigate the different types of work done in the project team.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different work positions or types in a project team are identified and an outline is written of the kind of work done by three people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The work done in the project team is categorised according to its purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of each category of work is discussed with reference to the efficiency of the project team. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The work in the project support teams or sections are identified as a part of a set of related systems each with a role and a value.
