PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the production and understanding of working piping drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of piping draughting
  • Identifying and drawing schematic drawings
  • Identifying, describing and drawing isometric layouts and flow diagrams 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 3 on the NQF or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Piping components will include reducers, tee`s cap`s, couplings, plugs, swages, unions, elbows, flanges, valves, pumps and vessels.
  • Flow diagrams of systems will include process flow diagrams, mechanical flow diagrams, utility flow diagrams, mark numbers, flow arrow and line size dimensioning.

    1. Piping components are identified and described in accordance with accepted definitions.

    2. Piping components are drawn and placed correctly in a drawing

    3. A schematic view of piping layouts are drawn according to scale 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. An isometric drawing is drawn within agreed timeframes.

    1. An ISO layout of piping installations is drawn within agreed timeframes.

    2. Process, mechanical and utility flow diagrams are described and drawn.

    3. Mark numbers, flow arrows, line size and dimensions are inserted into the drawing.

    4. Flow sheet symbols and diagrams are drawn for instrumentation within agreed time frames
