PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable construction painters to hang wallpaper on surfaces. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies; Unit Standards 1 through 9. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Removal methods include dry stripping, soaking and steam stripping.
  • Existing coats are stripped by applying heat or chemicals, or by sanding or scraping.
  • Smoothness, and lack of tears and dirt marks include areas around doorframes and window reveals.
  • Wallpaper includes plastic and paper, plain, patterned, lined and textured wallpapers.
  • Adhesives include starch, cellulose, and PVA.
  • Pattern arrangements include free match, offset match, straight match and repeatless design.
  • Surfaces include surfaces that are suitable for wallpapering.
  • Imperfections include nail head holes, cracks, crevices, bare areas, etc.
  • Contaminating agents include loose/flaking paint or varnish, loose mortar in joints, shutter release agents, hemp, grease and oil patches, flux, green discoloration (pipes), mortar lumps (floors), debris, rust, old wall paper, glue traces, etc.
  • Protruding objects or contaminating agents are sanded down, removed, scraped, sunk, etc.

    5. Primer is free of runs and misses.

    6. Imperfections are filled with the appropriate filler.

    7. All excess filler is removed.

    8. Filled areas are sanded and dusted down.

    Accreditation Process and Moderation:

    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998 b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Construction painters. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard.
