PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of preparing a test cell and to mount, connect and test an engine on a dynamometer and to record and submit the test results. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in automotive repair and maintenance and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, workshop equipment, power tools and measuring equipment, and to remove vehicle drive train components.

All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Read and interpret the job instructions. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Interpret job instructions include obtaining technical data, the identification and selection of tools and equipment and the type of engine.
  • Type of engine includes multiple cylinders and the various configurations for petrol and diesel.
  • Various configurations include flat; straight; in-line and "V". 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The job instructions are interpreted and confirmed in terms of the requirements of the task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate tools and equipment are obtained in accordance with the job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Workshop manuals are selected in accordance with the engine and dynamometer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The differences in the design of engines and dynamometers are explained in terms of their functions and limitations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the test cell, secure and connect engine. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Preparing includes the checking of couplings, fuel quantity, cooling quantity, ventilation, lubricants, probes, cables, hoses, locking and safety devices.
  • Secure and connect engine includes the probes, cables, hoses, locking and safety devices. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The engine and dynamometer are prepared for use in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The dynamometer is calibrated according to the engine specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dynamometer is checked for functionality in accordance with workshop safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of using a dynamometer that has not been correctly prepared are explained in terms of the results and potential damage to the engine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not correctly securing and connecting the engine are explained in terms of potential damage and safety hazards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Test engine, record and submit results. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Test includes to run the engine to specifications and load ranges.
  • Specifications and load ranges include output, torque and horse power (HP).
  • Recording of results include computer print out and/or written reports.
  • Submit reports to relevant department. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The engine is tested in accordance with engine manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Load ranges are applied in accordance with engine manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dynamometer is operated in accordance with workplace and manufacturer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of using a dynamometer incorrectly are explained in terms of potential damage to the engine and incorrect readings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Results of the dynamometer test are recorded in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Results are distributed and filed in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Work is conducted in accordance with flat rate time schedules. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Disconnect and remove engine and restore the test cell. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Remove engine includes disconnect couplings, hoses, cables, locking and safety devices and remove engine with cradle/mounting mechanism.
  • Restore test cell includes the closing of valves, clean tools and equipment and water and/or oil spillage.

    The engine is disconnected from the dynamometer in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All couplings are disconnected without causing damage to the coupling or the engine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools are used in accordance with their design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The equipment and test room are restored to a safe and serviceable condition in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not correctly restoring the workplace to a serviceable condition are explained in terms of potential damage and safety hazards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply safety concepts during dynamometer testing of the engine. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Safe transporting of the engine in and out of the test bay.
  • Wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Use and disposal of cleaning agents and fluids.

    No damage is caused to the dynamometer, engine or tools.

    All repair manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after the task are adhered to.
