PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit will enable qualifying learners to apply image analysis methodology in different contexts. Learners will be able to interpret requests from clients, work out a plan of action to determine information and provide deductions made to the client in various formats. This unit standard will enable learners to use image interpretation methods and techniques to make findings for various purposes.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Evaluate features of the subject of analysis.
  • Apply principles of image interpretation (II).
  • Apply an image interpretation process.
  • Make deductions and apply quality assurance to verify user requirements.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication, at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematics, at NQF Level 4.

The learners is presumed to be competent in the following unit standards:
  • Perform scaling and mensuration of vertical and oblique aerial images, Level 5.
  • Design a quality assurance system, Level 5.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Evaluate features of the subject of analysis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Key features and objects within the core subject of the task are recognised to determine their potential significance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Associated features and objects are recognised to determine their potential significance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The relationship between key and associated features and objects is assessed for interpretation purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Quantities of features and objects found are determined in order to make deductions for decision making purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Features and objects are identified by means of international accepted naming conventions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
International accepted naming conventions may refer to but is not limited to NATO naming convention.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Identified features and objects are analysed in terms of their technical descriptions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Technical descriptions refer but are not limited to descriptions found in reference materials such as Jane's Manuals.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Apply principles of image interpretation (II).
    OUTCOME NOTES
Learners must be assessed on all principles.
    OUTCOME RANGE
    Principles must include:
  • Shape, size, shadow, pattern, site, tone and colour, texture, association and resolution.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The principles of image analysis are described with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The principles of image analysis are used in a given situation.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Given situation may include but is not limited to structured scenarios, case studies and controlled scenarios.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Deductions based on image interpretation principles are made and verified for various purposes.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Various purposes may include but is not limited to planning purposes, intelligence purposes and operational purposes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Apply an image interpretation process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Image properties are assessed to determine whether the image will provide required information.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Image properties may refer to but are not limited:
  • Coverage, type, scale, resolution and date of photography.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Given tasks are analysed in terms of client's requirements to determine processes to be followed.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Process may refer to but is not limited to:
  • Plans, structure of work and format of the product and output.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A search method is applied in a given situation to detect objects and features.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES
    Both methods must be assessed.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Search methods refer to the general method and the study method.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Search methods are analysed according to their advantages, disadvantages and limitations in given situations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
A given situation is assessed in order to select which search method should be used.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
The identity of detected objects are verified using measurement techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
The terms "possible" and "probable" are distinguished for use.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Make deductions and apply quality assurance to verify user requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Findings are verified using technical references.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Technical references refers to but is not limited to calculations, measurement and equipment specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Findings are assessed to determine whether it meets the original request from clients.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
