PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the GIS occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GIS skills leading to qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will have an understanding of how to process and or create simple cartographic models under supervision.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understand the concept of cartographic modeling.
  • Interpret and execute an existing, simple cartographic model.
  • Understand and explain the stages in the development of a cartographic model.
  • Adopt a standard method for presenting a cartographic model. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following:
  • Perform basic spatial and hybrid queries under supervision.
  • Basic Algebra for NQF Level 4.
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.

    The learner understands and explains the terminology of cartographic models.

    Different types of inputs and outputs are understood and explained in relation to cartographic modeling.

  • Vector data, raster data, alphanumerical data, understanding that an output of one equation may be the input for another.

    Different types of operations and equations are understood and explained in relation to cartographic modeling.

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, buffering, overlays, intersection, union, XOR, clip, dissolve, merge, alphanumeric query statements.

    The need for standardisation is understood and explained in relation to cartographic modeling.

  • Terminology, legends, symbology, operations and methodologies.

    Interpret and execute an existing, simple cartographic model.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Commonly used symbology used in cartographic models is understood and explained under supervision. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tomlin's original model and any other model available to the student (E.g. Idrisi model, ESRI model, ERDAS model).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The holistic process addressed by the cartographic model is understood and explained under supervision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The learner understands and explains the individual equations, including their parameters, of simple cartographic models. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    E.g. Buffer operations can be single or multiple and require a buffer distance.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The learner understands and explains error propagation through cartographic models. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The model is executed correctly and the validity of the result can be demonstrated under supervision.

    The problem to be addressed by a cartographic model is understood and explained in relation to the GISc analysis.

    The expected outputs from the cartographic model are identified and explained as well as their desired parameters.

  • Geometric scale, resolution, accuracy, precision, associated alphanumerical data, data type, scale of measurement, area of interest.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The inputs to the cartographic model and their required parameters are identified and explained.

    A standard symbology set is adopted for the cartographic model. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A consistent methodology for writing equations is adopted for the cartographic model.

    The importance of the legend to the cartographic model is understood and explained for presenting a cartographic model. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance.
