PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard has been developed for the GIS occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GIS skills leading to qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will be able to do a small GIS project.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Interpret a project scope.
  • Prepare a GI System to solve the problem.
  • Develop the project.
  • Develop spatial operations required for the project.
  • Develop map reports.

Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.
  • All unit standards in the ND: GIS Level 5.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are included with specific outcomes as necessary.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Display ranges are set up and used in terms of project scope.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Prepare a GI System to solve the problem.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Required data sets, scales and fitness for use are determined with relation to the GIS project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Data for the project is collected and assessed with relation to the problem and goals of the project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Appropriate software is selected and assessed with relation to the GIS project.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Develop the project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The project environment is set up with regard to the GIS project.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Spatial reference system, database tables and relationships, feature classes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Data is read into the system or captured where necessary.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Spatial and attribute data are linked with regard to the GIS project.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Develop spatial operations required for the project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Spatial data are selected according to simple attribute criteria.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A simple spatial buffer is created with regard to the project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Features are selected within the buffer polygon.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
    Develop map reports.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A base map is designed and printed according to symbology standards provided with regard to the project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The distribution of data within a table is analysed and grouped in logical classes.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
At least two attribute fields are to be analysed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Thematic map reports are generated and printed with regard to the project.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
At least two map reports are to be created.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    Display ranges are applied appropriately.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
    Notes to Assessors:
  • The selected project shall allow for each of the assessment criteria to be evaluated.
  • "Estimated hours" relates to the minimum time needed by learners to apply the concepts and be evaluated. Certain of the assessment criteria may take much longer due to repetitive nature of these tasks required to repeat the project.
  • This unit standard is intended as a final unit standard after all of the other unit standards in the Technician qualification have been achieved.
  • Please bear in mind that this unit standard is aimed at technicians, do not over-complicate this unit standard.
  • The selected project could typically be in the form of a two week project from within the learner's working area.
  • The project scope should be prepared and supplied to the learner. The scope should be limited to: 12 base feature layers from well-known available data sources (Including cadastral data, 1:50 000 map layer data), two layers that are project specific and at least one layer that is generated (such as a buffer). It should include at least one ASCII data set that needs to be linked to one of the feature layers. Finally it should include at least one raster data set.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
