PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of maintaining spray painting equipment to ensure consistency of the application.

This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression and is a foundational unit standard for a spray painter. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for spray painting vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Keep the work area safe and productive. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Spray painting equipment includes, but is not limited to the following types of equipment: compressor, spray booth, air dryer, regulator, hoses, couplings, filters, dust extractor, lights, spray gun cleaner.
  • Maintenance does not include repair of broken or damaged components.

    Additional range information is provided at specific outcomes and assessment criteria as necessary.

    Demonstrate knowledge of maintaining spray painting equipment.

    The types of equipment that require maintenance are identified from a maintenance schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The extent of maintenance that can be performed on equipment is identified from manufacturer specifications.

    The point at which maintenance must be conducted is described according to manufacturer specifications and workplace requirements.

    Logged hours of equipment use, routine checks, maintenance schedules, workshop requirements.

    Methods of maintaining equipment are explained in terms of the type of equipment and function to perform.

    Cleanable and replacement parts are identified in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.

    Consequences of not maintaining equipment in the correct state are described in terms of the impact on the consistency of application of paint.

    Tools and equipment required for the maintenance task are identified and checked for functionality prior to commencing the task.

    Relevant personnel are informed of the planned maintenance and downtime of specific equipment in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Equipment to be maintained is made safe to work on in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace requirements.

    Making safe includes aspects such as switching off, isolating and releasing pressure.

    Conduct maintenance of spray painting equipment.

    Equipment is cleaned according to workplace requirements. Solvents and cleaning agents used are appropriate to the component.

    Components are dismantled and reassembled in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Damage or wear is identified and reported in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Replacement parts are replaced with suitable parts in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Fluid levels are confirmed to be in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Hazardous materials include lubricants, solvents and cleaning agents.

    Applicable SHE procedures are followed during the preparation and application processes.

    Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production.

    Documentation is completed and processed in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Documentation includes completing job cards, check lists and reports.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
