PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be able to demonstrate knowledge of civil construction plant, equipment, and activities, describe quality assurance of civil construction activities and describe effects of adverse weather on construction environments and activities. Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of construction plant operators.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining construction processes and sequences.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of civil construction plant and equipment.
  • Describing effects of adverse weather on construction environments and activities.

    Civil construction activities are described in relation to their purpose and processes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of activities includes, but are not limited to:
  • Demolition, site clearing, earthworks, site preparation, excavation, foundations, erection and construction of structures, services, pavements and surfacing, road marking and erection of signs.

    Civil construction activities are explained in relation to their sequences.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Large civil construction plant are identified and explained in terms of their uses and standard industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of plant includes, but is not limited to:
  • Bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, wheeled loader, scraper, grader, self-propelled roller and dump truck.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Civil construction equipment is identified and explained in terms of their uses and standard industry practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Lifting gear and attachments, scaffolding, wheelbarrows, picks and shovels, ladders, safety barricade, compressed air power tools, electric power tools, leads, transformers, safety equipment and adjustable props.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Survey and set out equipment is described in terms of locating control marks for civil construction activities.

    Effects of machinery operations are explained in relation to the environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
