PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
This qualification will allow a learner in the mining and minerals industry to obtain a nationally recognised qualification in mining operations in the area of underground hard rock mining. It will also contribute to the upliftment of the mining industry and will set a standard for professionalism in the industry. The attainment of this qualification will also attract and retain quality learners and employees. This qualification will also provide for recognition of prior learning to allow for the recognition of existing and common knowledge and skills that will not only allow a learner to gain credits towards this qualification, but also to move across the different occupational areas.
People credited with this qualification are able to: Rationale: The Mining & Minerals sector serves the need of the society and the economy. The National Certificate in Mining Operations: Underground Hard Rock is designed to contribute to mining operations, in particular underground hard rock mining competence. Persons working in underground mining operations require a sound knowledge of the mining and minerals environment and the capacity to understand underground mining operations related to underground hard rock mining. In the Mining and Minerals sector, Employees are appointed on technical knowledge (operations), experience and potential supervisory ability. It is therefore assumed that learners attempting this qualification are competent in numeric and communication skills and/or learners are technically competent on a specific aspect of underground mining operations or related fabrication and extraction field. The National Certificate in Mining Operations: Underground Hard Rock (L2) is designed to meet the needs of learners in the Mining and Minerals sector (or those wish to enter the Mining and minerals sector) who require technical expertise and essential knowledge needed to earn a formal qualification in mining operations. The qualification facilitates access from previously disadvantaged groups and other learners to acquire the technical knowledge and skills that are required. This qualification will enhance the status, productivity and employability of the learner within the mining and minerals industry as well as contribute to the quality, production rate and growth. This allows for access, progression, portability and mobility within and between the different mining operations areas in the mining and minerals industry. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that candidates embarking on learning towards this qualification are already competent in the following areas:
Recognition of Prior Learning: This qualification can be achieved wholly or in part through recognition of prior learning in terms of the criteria laid out. Evidence can be presented in a variety of forms, including international or previous local qualifications, reports, testimonials mentioning functions performed, work records, portfolios, videos of practice and performance records. All such evidence should be judged according to the general principles of assessment described in the note to assessors. |

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES |
Candidates for the National Certificate in Underground Hard Rock Mining Operations must achieve the outcomes specified in terms of a combination of specific and critical cross-field outcomes as defined in the different unit standards. The detailed lists of unit standards for each category are presented in the matrix of this qualification.
Fundamental Exit level outcomes: 1. Communicate effectively in the workplace and a variety of other contexts. 2. Apply mathematical principles in practical applications. 3. Apply natural science principles in practical applications. See matrix for the list of unit standards that relate to these exit level outcomes. Core Exit level outcomes: 1. Work in accordance with sound Occupational Health, Hygiene, Safety and Environmental principles and practices. 2. Conduct mining operations in Underground Hard Rock mines. See matrix for the list of unit standards that relate to these exit level outcomes. Consistency of Exit Level Outcomes with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes: In accordance with SAQA guidelines, all unit standards include the assessment of relevant critical cross-field outcomes. Consequently, Exit Level Outcomes are consistent with critical cross-field outcome requirements. The following CCFO's have been addressed in this qualification as per the unit standards outlined in the Annexures. |
ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
Fundamental Assessment Criteria:
1. The learner is able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing while performing the tasks related to conducting mining operations in underground hard rock mines and in other related contexts. 2. The learner is able to apply mathematical principles and techniques while performing the tasks related to conducting mining operations in underground hard rock mines and in other related contexts. 3.
